What to Buy & How to Buy It
For modern Topps sets, SPs and SSPs of rookie cards and star players are the chase cards. Always check the Topps variation SP/SSP guide (available on Beckett and collector forums) to identify which card numbers have variations. SSPs of stars like Mike Trout or Aaron Judge can be worth hundreds of dollars.
Investment & Value Guide
SPs and SSPs of Hall of Fame-bound players tend to hold value. The "photo variation" collector subset is passionate and deep — a complete set of variations for a given year is a compelling collecting goal. Graded high-SP/SSP rookies of proven stars are strong performers.
Types & Variations
SP (short print): lower print run, alternate photo, typically denotes approximately 10% of base print run. SSP (super short print): even lower print run. Image variations: alternate photo of the same player, often featuring different uniform or position. Action SPs: player shown in mid-action rather than posed. Seasonal: holiday-themed or special occasion variations.
